The ability to develop custom textile solutions within our talented Prototype and Design Department has allowed us to work on projects ranging from custom carrying cases to medical and military garments. Our garments are designed with both comfort and performance in mind, and sometimes a vest is too bulky and impedes the wearers movement in their respective field. Holsters tend to have less mass than vests, making them inherently lighter, more discreet, and more compact. While most often associated with guns or other weaponry, holsters are some of the most versatile garments due to their wide range of applications and the ability for the wearer to easily access what is in the compartment.
Common Styles
The most common styles of holsters are:
- Outside Waistband
- Inside Waistband
- Small of Back
- Around the Chest
- Ankle
These locations are most often used in regards to gun transport, but can also be used in other industries. If utilized for transport of a specific device that relies heavily on body placement, holsters can be developed for any part of the body. Working with a cut and sew manufacturer such as Fieldtex allows complete control over fit on not only the body, but over the compartment for the device as well.
Medical and First Responder
There are numerous applications of holsters in the medical field. In the case of doctors, nurses, and First Responders, it is a convenient way to have necessary instruments on your person at all times. First Responders carry durable and well stocked kits, but using a holster is an easy way to make sure that you have crisis specific tools on hand in order to reduce response time. Using an abrasion resistant textile, such as a high denier Cordura, can protect tools in the field.
In terms of medical tech and wearable devices, holsters offer a discreet solution – for example, a waist worn ECG or the external technology of an artificial organ, LVAD, or any other implanted tech. If a patient is wearing a holster, they don’t have to think twice about cords or tech transport because it will already be securely attached to them. Biocompatible, moisture wicking, and/or breathable material can be used for holsters sitting directly against the skin.
Military
As mentioned before, the obvious application for military holsters would be for weaponry. However, more and more mobile military tech is being developed that requires convenient transport. Tactical holsters allow the technology to remain accessible, protected, and close without having to knock around in a rucksack with other durable equipment. Developing holsters that are MOLLE compatible also gives the wearer the ability to integrate additional MOLLE pouches and pockets, expanding the options and amount that the holster can transport. Using Berry-Compliant (when applicable) and durable textiles will ensure security of the wearers equipment.
